The purpose of athletic programs at the parish or school level in the diocese is to help participants further develop their innate athletic abilities and to learn invaluable lessons of teamwork, leadership, cooperation, services and sportsmanship.
Athletic competition among Parish schools will result in developing a better sense of Christian sportsmanship for the player, coach, and spectator and in the realization that athletic sportsmanship is an important aspect of the virtue of charity.
St. Pius X offers a variety sporting activities. Soccer and basketball are the two largest in participation. An association with the Norfolk Youth Soccer League allows us to form teams within the school and play against many Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Catholic and Non-Catholic teams. Seasons are either Fall (Sept ~ Nov) or Spring (March ~ May).
We are a part of the Tidewater Catholic Basketball League. Within this, St. Pius X School participates in a basketball season that runs from October ~ February. We play against the other Catholic schools in the Hampton Roads area. There are Boys and Girls teams for all grade levels.
During the summer vacations, we offer basketball clinics to help the players polish their skills.
Every March we have our own Pewee basketball program. This is open to Kindergarten through 2nd grade students. Co-ed teams are formed, playing only on Sunday afternoons. Here our young players are taught basic skills and teamwork.
At the Middle school level, sporting activities have ranged from cross-country running, golf, and field hockey. We are working each year to offer an additional sport.
St. Pius X School has formed an Alumni Association Fund. Dues for Alumni members are $25.00 and will support an endowment fund. The interest from the fund will be used for scholarships for St. Pius X students and improvements to the school facility. If you are a graduate from St. Pius and would like to become an Alumni member, please e-mail your name, address, phone, fax/e-mail and the year of the class you graduated from to: lbarrett@piusxparish.org. The Home & School Association is a group to which all St. Pius parents belong. We are mainly a social organization that provides fun and fellowship for St. Pius families. Some of our annual events include a Halloween party, Kids Bingo, and Valentine's or Mardi Gras family dances. We host and fund various assemblies for students and for parents as entertainment and enrichment. We sponsor different fund-raisers throughout the year such as school logo items, Sally Foster wrapping paper, and this year we were very fortunate to sponsor an Outback dinner night in the parish hall. Through our fund-raising initiatives, we have purchased equipment for the school such as a laminating machine, enhancements for the Accelerated Reader program, playground improvements, and TVs and equipment, which enabled us to broadcast the morning announcements on TV in every classroom. In addition to these fund-raisers, we function financially off of family dues, which are $10 per year, per family.
